Parkop Secures Electric Buses And Waste-to-Energy Solution For Port Moresby

Port Moresby, April 12, 2026 – The Nation’s Capital is set to enter a new phase of clean transport and modern waste management, following three days of high-level engagements in Shenzhen, China. The National Capital District Commission (NCDC) delegation led by NCD Governor Powes Parkop has concluded the third day of their visit with secured strategic partnerships to introduce electric buses into the city’s public transport system which is operated under NCDC, and to transform the Baruni landfill into a modern waste-to-energy facility.
The first fleet of electric buses is expected later this year, marking the beginning of a phased transition away from diesel-powered vehicles. This initiative will improve air quality, reduce fuel costs, and deliver a more reliable and efficient transport service for city residents.
Governor Parkop emphasised the need for Papua New Guinea to adopt sustainable energy strategies that are ecologically friendly, including solar, wind, gas, thermal, hydro, ocean generation of energy, and electric vehicles, given the challenges associated with fossil fuels.
In parallel, NCDC has reached agreement in principle with Shenzhen, its sister city, to convert the Baruni landfill into a facility that generates electricity from waste. This will significantly reduce landfill volumes while turning waste into a productive resource, supporting the city’s long-term energy and environmental needs.
Governor Parkop stated: “This is not a study visit. We came here to secure real, working solutions for Port Moresby. Cleaner public transport and turning waste into energy are outcomes that will directly benefit our people.”
The proposed waste-to-energy project will also introduce improved systems for waste collection, recycling, and recovery, with the long-term goal of reducing reliance on landfill and moving towards a cleaner, more sustainable city.
These developments mark a major step forward in NCDC’s commitment to building a safe, clean, planned, and liveable city under the Amazing Port Moresby urbanisation vision.
This high-level engagement in Shenzhen, also marks the 50th anniversary of Papua New Guinea–China diplomatic relations and the 10th anniversary of the Shenzhen–Port Moresby sister city partnership. The upcoming APEC Summit in Shenzhen this November will serve as a global platform to showcase and advance this growing relationship.
