Governor Parkop Leads High- Level Talks To Improve Markets, Transport And Energy Projects For City Residents

This visit marks an important step in strengthening our partnership with our sister city, Shenzhen, and partners in Guangdong Province as we pursue transformative projects that will support clean energy, modern infrastructure and sustainable development for Port Moresby.
NCD Governor Parkop made this remarks upon his arrival in Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province, China yesterday.
This visit to China was arranged at the invitation of Shenzhen Municipal government under the Sister city agreement with city of Port Moresby and Municipal authority NCDC.
Invitation also came at the behest of Shenzhen Energies and China Construction Steel Corporation through their Municipal government.
Delegates led by Governor Parkop include City Manager Ravu Frank, Ms Janet Haua from NCDC Special Projects, NCD Women's Commissioner Elis Siki, Dr Newton Albert and Mr John Makop from the NCD Governor's office.
During their visit, they will discuss joint initiatives to build a waste-to-energy plant at Baruni Landfill in Port Moresby that will convert all Port Moresby waste into power.
“Feasibility studies have been undertaken over the last two years, and we are now in the final stage of negotiations to secure the development of this vital and impactful project for Port Moresby. This will be a game changer for waste management, cleanliness and energising the City and we are keen to get this project going without delay” Parkop said.
Discussion in this respect will be undertaken today in Shenzhen to secure funding for the project, which is expected to cost around K500 million to produce 10 to 20 Megawatts of electricity enough to power 1//4 of the City and all street light all public facilities owned by the City like markets, stadiums, parks and beaches.
Governor Parkop said they also plan to discuss fundings for:
●construction of three Provincial Markets similar in size to Gordon's Market.
●construction of a solar farm to support the waste-to-energy project at Baruni;
● construction of a level 4 hospital for NCD.
●procurement of electrical buses and vehicles to replace the public and School buses that NCDC operates.
●improving tourism between Port Moresby and Guangdong Province, riding on the China Southern flight connections and other cultural and sporting exchanges between the two Sister Cities and provinces.
Discussion will also feature increased cultural and business exchanges and cooperation and APEC 2026 which will be held in Shenzhen in November, 2026.
On their arrival, Mr. Li Hongzhi, Deputy Director of the Foreign Affairs Office of Guangdong Province, who also hosted them for dinner, received the delegation on arrival.
