International Women’s Day Walk breakfast meeting with Prime Minister James Marape
Following the successful International Women’s Day Walk yesterday, key stakeholders held a follow-up breakfast meeting with Prime Minister James Marape today at the Hilton Hotel, focusing on accelerating actions towards gender equality, women’s empowerment, and ending gender-based violence. A number of initiatives were agreed upon as part of an immediate, medium- to long-term, and intergenerational action plan to advance this national and global priority. Prime Minister Marape will announce these initiatives in due course.
The meeting brought together key stakeholders, including JICA, UN agencies, Diplomatic Missions from the USA, Australia, and New Zealand, PNGTUC, NCDC, ACDP, the Department for Community Development, and the Department for Prime Minister and NEC, along with civil society representatives such as Soroptimist International Inc. It was a highly productive and valuable discussion, reinforcing collective commitment to meaningful progress.
As Papua New Guinea marks International Women’s Day, this renewed commitment reflects the spirit of the PNG Constitution, which upholds equal rights, dignity, and participation for all citizens, regardless of gender. Advancing gender equality is not just a policy objective but a constitutional and moral imperative that requires unwavering action across all sectors of society.
