Governor Welcomes Visting Naval Fleet

Amazing Port Moresby witnessed a historic fleet review yesterday afternoon (Thursday, 4th September) in front of the Apec Haus as the country marked its Golden Jubilee with visiting naval forces from Australia, India, Tonga and France.
National Capital District (NCD) Governor Powes Parkop welcomed the contingents, describing their presence as a proud moment for the city and the entire nation.
“On behalf of the capital city Port Moresby, I would like to take this great privilege and opportunity to welcome all the visiting naval contingents coming to our city and our country for this grand occasion, the golden jubilee of our country’s independence,” Governor Parkop said when addressing them.
He acknowledged PNG’s Chief of Defence Force Admiral Philip Polewara, Royal Australian Navy Chief Vice Admiral Mark Hammond, and commanders of the allied fleets.
He said the ships in Port Moresby Harbour and the marching contingents in the city were a powerful reminder of global friendship and cooperation.
“In the Pacific region the sea connects us. Whether it’s trade, security, disaster response or protecting our marine environment, none of us can do it alone. We rely on each other and that’s why partnerships like this one we are celebrating today are so important,” he said.
Governor Parkop also noted PNG’s role in adressing global issues such as climate change, saying the nation is grateful to stand with partners who shared its vision for peace and cooperation.
He concluded by thanking the visiting sailors and officers for their professionalism and wished them a memorable stay during PNG’s 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations.
