Flag Raising 50 years ago

50 years ago, on this very ground in Port Moresby, Gough Whitlam stood side by side with Papua New Guinea’s first Prime Minister, Sir Michael Somare to mark the birth of PNG as an independent country.

Now, the Papua New Guinea flag proudly flies on these grounds.

Today we honour the rich history and the deep ties between our nations - built on shared history, values and an enduring bond.
