WALK FOR COMMUNITIES SETS THE STAGE IN THE LEAD-UP TO 48th NDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATIONS

Youths and women from various communities citywide participated in the Walk for Communities this morning.

The usual walk, initiated by the Active City Development Program (ACDP), started at the Sir Hubert Murray Stadium and ended at Ela Beach in Amazing Port Moresby.

The objective of the walk is to foster a sense of togetherness among our diverse communities, aiming to celebrate the collective strength of everyone and highlighting the importance of unity and collaboration in building a stronger future.

The walk also resonates with the spirit of unity and community empowerment leading up to Papua New Guinea’s 48th Independence Day celebrations from 14th to 17th September 2023.

The Founder of the Active City Development Program and Director of Amazing Port Moresby Directorate of the National Capital District Commission, Ms. Fazilah Bazari, thanked everyone for their participation.

She praised them as champions for the city for showing everyone else what is possible regarding discipline and behaviour.

She urged them to bring family and friends to join the Independence Walk, where PNG coloured t-shirts will be distributed to everyone who turns up for the Unity Walk.

NCD Governor, Hon. Powes Parkop, also joined this morning’s walk, describing it as an important event encouraging everyone to continue to participate in Active City Programs as the City and country prepares for the 48th Independence Day celebrations.

Governor Parkop thanked ACDP for organizing it.

Commending all the communities that joined the ACDP since 2015, Governor Parkop added it is through their simple contributions of echoing their small voice in the active walk for peace, freedom, against violence and other issues affecting the city and the entire nation that has eventually contributed to making a big impact and outcomes for the city and country

Governor Parkop that two major developments in the City and the county can be also attributed to the perseverance and determination of the Active City Program.

“Last week we signed a MOU with PNGTPA to promote Port Moresby as a tourist destination. Active City Program has contributed to this outcome by our continuous efforts to promote the City positively including effort of the participants to take ownership of the city by regularly cleaning and beautifying it most times on voluntary basis. Your continuous walk and call against gender basis violence and violence against women has also contributed to the Parliaments decision to created the Permanent Parliamentary Committee on Gender Equality, Women’s Empowerment and Ending Gender Base Violence”

Governor Parkop commended the communities and encourage continuing and new participants in the Active City Program to continue their efforts as it is making a difference both at personal level and at City and national level. As the community, you must do your part because it is our city. He said that if we do our part well, we all will have a promising future.
