TREKKING IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF HISTORY

NCD Governor Hon. Powes Parkop is delighted to announce the inclusion of the Remembrance Day 3-Day Trekking in our city's tourism offerings, signifying its historical and tourism significance for both Port Moresby and Central Province. This immersive 3-day trek aims to welcome local and international tourists to pay tribute to the courageous PNG soldiers who fought alongside Australian forces in defending PNG, particularly Port Moresby and Australia during World War II.

The Remembrance Day 3-Day Trekking holds profound importance as it commemorates the moment when PNG soldiers united as a cohesive force, transcending tribal and clan boundaries for the first time. The battle of Kokoda symbolized the convergence of two nations - Australia and PNG. For Australia, standing alongside PNG soldiers played a pivotal role in shaping their national identity independent of Europe. Similarly, for PNG, this pivotal event laid the groundwork for the birth of our nation on 16th September 1975.

During the Remembrance Day Ceremony at Owens Corner on Sunday, 23rd July, Governor Parkop highlighted the historical significance of this annual event. The City of Port Moresby takes great pride in preserving the memory of this momentous occasion and will present it to the Guangdong Provincial Government in China later this year as part of our commitment to tourism development.

The annual Remembrance Day 3-Day Trekking stands as a lasting tribute to the brave soldiers and a testament to the enduring friendship between Australia and PNG. This initiative not only honors our shared history but also enriches our city's tourism landscape, inviting visitors to embark on a journey that harmoniously intertwines the past and present.

Governor Parkop extends heartfelt gratitude to the PNG Tourism Promotion Authority, the Kokoda Track Authority and local track operators for their collaboration in commemorating Remembrance Day every July 23rd, to remember and honor the sacrifices made by those who fought for freedom, uniting our nations. He also commends their efforts in promoting healthy lifestyles, domestic tourism, and creating income-generating opportunities for the community.
