PORT MORESBY STAKEHOLDERS PLEDGE TO MAINTAIN MOMENTUM AND EXPLORE INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS FOR PLASTIC WASTE

In a post-World Environment Day (WED) meeting held at the NCDC Annex Level 2, stakeholders gathered to reflect on the success of the citywide World Environment Day campaign held for almost 20 days and discuss the next steps for sustaining environmental initiatives in Port Moresby.

The meeting, hosted by the directors of Amazing Port Moresby and Community Social Services, provided an opportunity for stakeholders to share their experiences and provide feedback on the WED activities. The directors presented an impact report showcasing the significant impact of the 10 activities spearheaded by the National Capital District Commission (NCDC) together with its stakeholders and partners. The report included photos, statistics on people impacted, waste collected, and man-hours contributed.

Representatives from various organizations and government entities were in attendance, including Total Energies, the National Sports Federation, CIS, UPNG, CEPA, SR Curio, Parks & Gardens, NCDC Education, NCDC Waste Management, NCDC Events, and Amazing Port Moresby Team. Each stakeholder expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to participate in WED and pledged their commitment to continue supporting sustainability efforts.

The stakeholders discussed a range of topics, including the continuation of the city's clean-up and plastic bottle recycling initiatives, ongoing tree planting activities, and support for CEPA's ongoing projects. They also explored ways to collaborate and strengthen partnerships to achieve long-term environmental conservation goals.

Governor Parkop made a surprise visit at the end of the meeting after his Parliament sitting, expressing his gratitude to all stakeholders and acknowledging their efforts in making WED a success. He emphasized the importance of maintaining momentum and discussed potential strategies for addressing plastic waste, including the possibility of a plastic ban. Governor Parkop also mentioned ongoing discussions with companies to explore waste-to-energy solutions.

The stakeholders were inspired by Governor Parkop's energy and vision for a sustainable future. They expressed their commitment to continue working together and pledged to meet regularly to discuss progress, plan quarterly activities, and engage more stakeholders in their efforts.

As the meeting concluded, stakeholders commended the collaborative spirit and emphasized the need for ongoing communication, amplifying efforts, and exploring innovative solutions to address environmental challenges in Port Moresby. They expressed their determination to continue the journey towards a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable city.
