NCDC RAISES AWARENESS ON PLASTIC POLLUTION THROUGH PLASTIC PYROLYSIS DEMONSTRATION IN SCHOOLS

PORT MORESBY: The National Capital District Commission (NCDC), in partnership with the Active City Development Program (ACDP), conducted a series of awareness campaigns on Plastics Pyrolysis at schools in Moresby South Electorate of the National Capital District (NCD).

From May 17 to June 2, the campaigns were held at Koki Primary, Badihagwa Secondary School, Don Bosco Technological Institute, and Kila Kila Secondary School. The NCDC officers from Health, Education, and Waste Management divisions actively participated in delivering the important messages.

Aligned with the theme of this year's World Environment Day, "Beating Plastic Pollution," the campaigns focused on the harmful effects of plastics on the environment. Students were reminded of the three 'R's - reduce, reuse, and recycle - as effective practices to manage waste.

As a highlight of the campaigns, a plastic pyrolysis demonstration was conducted to showcase the process and its positive impact on plastic waste management. Students had the opportunity to witness the effect of pyrolysis and gain a deeper understanding of its importance in reducing plastic pollution.

The students were encouraged to dispose of plastics in recycle bins, where they can be transformed into valuable products like energy and fuel. A local scientific company demonstrated how plastic waste can be burned to produce diesel, petrol, jet fuel, and cooking gas.

Ms. E. Sioni, Deputy Head Teacher of Koki Primary School, expressed gratitude for the educational visit and highlighted the significance of the plastic pyrolysis demonstration in gaining student buy-in and fostering a sense of environmental responsibility.

The students themselves appreciated the program, recognizing the importance of proper waste disposal and the potential of plastic pyrolysis in addressing plastic pollution.

NCDC continues its commitment to raising awareness and promoting sustainable practices for a cleaner and greener Port Moresby.
