INTERNATIONAL MARATHON

PORT MORESBY: The Amazing Port Moresby International Marathon concluded yesterday morning marks a significant milestone in promoting sports, healthy lifestyle and tourism in the city and the entire PNG, says NCD Governor Hon. Powes Parkop.

Speaking during its prize presentation at the APEC Haus, Governor Parkop said the event, more importantly, inspired young children in the city and the entire country to take healthy lifestyles seriously.

The marathon, he said, reflects the spirit of unity when a total of 147 runners, both locals and internationals, participated in three different categories of the marathon-full marathon, half marathon and 10km race.

The event saw 42 international participants who have travelled onshore from 11 different countries, including Australia, the United States, Poland, Thailand, France, Japan, Hong Kong, Switzerland, Canada, Germany and Iran.

Governor Parkop pledged his commitment to supporting such future sporting events, which are in alignment with NCDC's vision of creating a city that is safe, clean, healthy, planned and liveable.

Governor Parkop called on the international participants to take home with them fond memories of the city and become good ambassadors to their relatives, peers and colleagues.

Governor Parkop thanked the Trophy Haus, Fincorp, Eliseo, TruGas, Post Courier, Coca-Cola, VIVO, St. Johns Ambulance, and the Hilton for their sponsorship.

In collaboration with the Port Moresby Road Runners and the sponsors, the National Capital District Commission (NCDC) successfully hosted the inaugural Amazing Port Moresby International Marathon today (Sunday, 30th July 2023).

Jason Sambrook of POMRR commended NCDC, the sponsors and the volunteers for having delivered a successful event.

Mr Sambrook said the event was a great experience for everyone, adding it was an opportunity as well to learn for the better next year.

The Men’s Full Marathon was won by Alexander Scherz of Switzerland, whilst the Women’s by Yvonne Dubois from Hong Kong.

For the Half Marathon, Peter Baki from POMRR won the men’s race, while Mariana Raf from Finland won the women’s race. For the 10 KM race, both the men’s and women’s races were won respectively by Jason Richard and Antonia Ndrawii of POMRR.
