GOVERNOR PARKOP INVITES MORE PARTICIPATION IN THE WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY PROGRAM DURING STAKEHOLDER MEETING

The world comes together to celebrate World Environment Day on June 5, a significant event on the global calendar.

The Amazing Port Moresby team continues to make preparations to host and celebrate it with week-long activities planned to commence from May 21 through to June 5.

The theme for this year is "Solutions to Plastic Pollution", focusing on protecting land, air, oceans and seas from the damaging effects of plastic pollution.

Hosting a dialogue with stakeholders at City Hall Annex Level 2 yesterday, Governor Parkop welcomed everyone present, especially some new faces like the contingent from the PNG Defence Force.

The Governor was very happy with the presence of the PNGDF and their commitment. "Your presence as our military sends a strong message to the public; the large manpower you have is a welcome hand for the activities planned."

CEPA, WWF, UPNG, ExxonMobil, Nature Park, Miss Scuba PNG, CCDA, Total Energies, Partners with Melanesia, and Scuba International were all present for the meeting.

Governor Parkop said the emphasis is towards positive action. “We must translate the awareness of World Environment Day into meaningful and continued action.”

“As part of our contribution to the global effort, our programs are designed to inspire our people to actively participate in protecting our environment.”

The various planned events will involve schools, youth groups, communities, and the City.

Governor Parkop informed stakeholders that he would be inviting everyone in both the public and private sectors throughout the City to participate in World Environment Day activities.

"Let us use the World Environment Day as a launching pad for sustainable actions on climate change."

Governor Parkop said, "Climate Change and the Climate Emergency are happening every day. It is not going away and has no holiday."

"So let us also not rest and be complacent. Let us all do our part to protect our environment and save the planet for our future generations.“

The discussions included adopting long-term strategies and initiatives to inspire continued actions to conserve, preserve and mitigate the impact of climate change.

Governor Parkop thanked everyone for attending and for their contributions. "I like the great energy and unity we have. Let’s work together on successfully delivering our plans and activities."

More discussions will be held in the lead-up to the official launching of the World Environment Day Program on May 18 at Nature Park. The Amazing Port Moresby team welcomes the general public's ideas, initiatives and suggestions before the launch.
