FLAG RAISING TO START OFFICIAL 48TH INDEPENDENCE CELEBRATIONS

PORT MORESBY, September 16, 2023 - The official 48th Independence Day celebrations began with the traditional flag-raising ceremony at Independence Hill, organized by National Events. This solemn occasion has been a cherished tradition since Papua New Guinea gained its independence 48 years ago.

As the first rays of dawn bathed Independence Hill in soft light, attendees gathered in silence to witness the raising of the Red, Black, and Gold flag—the symbol of the nation's hard-fought freedom. Diplomats, members of parliament, and even United States Marines joined in this poignant moment, respectfully lowering their heads as the flag ascended.

Treasurer Ian Ling-Stuckey, representing Prime Minister James Marape, delivered a powerful Independence speech that resonated with the crowd. He emphasized that despite Papua New Guinea's youth and diversity, the country remains united under one flag. This unity, he stressed, is a testament to the strength of the nation's people.

NCD Governor Hon. Powes Parkop and NCD City Manager Mr. Ravu Frank were both part of this momentous historical event, further underscoring the significance of the flag-raising ceremony.

The flag-raising ceremony sets the tone for the 48th Independence Day celebrations, reminding all citizens of the shared history, diversity, and unity that define Papua New Guinea. As the day unfolds, various events and activities will continue to celebrate the nation's achievements and its promising future.

As Papua New Guinea looks ahead to its 50th Golden Jubilee in 2025, these annual Independence Day celebrations serve as a poignant reminder of the country's progress, resilience, and unwavering spirit.

The official start of the 48th Independence celebrations promises an exciting lineup of activities, performances, and cultural showcases, all designed to highlight the nation's rich heritage and promising future.
