ENHANCING NATIONAL UNITY TO ACHIEVE THE DREAMS OF OUR FOREFATHERS

PORT MORESBY: National Capital District (NCD) Governor Hon. Powes Parkop calls on everyone to enhance national unity, which will help enable the city and the entire country to achieve dreams that the nation’s forefathers had 48 years ago.

Governor Parkop made the call when speaking this morning (Friday morning) after the Independence Unity Walk, which started at the Murray Barracks and finished at Ela Beach, where the Contemporary Independence Festival is being staged and attended by almost 5,000 city residents.

The walk also marked the beginning of the 48th Independence celebrations in the city.

Participated in the walk were City Manager Ravu Frank and his NCDC staff, NCD Governor’s Officers, Metropolitan Superintendent Chief Inspector Silva Sika and his officers, the members of the police brass band, acting Chief of PNGDF Commodore Philip Polewara and his officers, students and teachers from various schools in NCD, Port Moresby Vipers players, Active City youths and communities and other city residents.

Governor Parkop said the city is the epitome of the nation of thousands of tribes, 860 languages and cultures united in diversity.

Given the diversity, he said, the world doubted the country’s independence and unity thereafter.

Paying tribute to the forefathers led by late Grand Chief Sir Michael Thomas Somare, Governor Parkop continued that they were determined and believed in the country and her people.

48 years on, the national unity in itself is an achievement the city and the country can be proud of, he vouched.

Reflecting on the city’s achievements contributing to the national outcomes, Governor Parkop recommits to the city's safe, clean, healthy and planned goals.

He reiterated that while celebrating the 48th Independence Anniversary, the city is rehearsing for the golden jubilee in 2025.

Sharing similar sentiments, City Manager Mr Frank said the walk demonstrated the 48-year journey of the city and the entire nation working together for national greatness.

He commended the Marape-Rosso government and the past governments for contributing to this remarkable journey.

Mr Frank pledged his staff’s recommitment to the city’s vision and goals set by the NCDC Board.

The unity walk event was concluded with a unity dance demonstrating independence, freedom and unity.
