PLANNED CITY CAMPAIGN PUTS WASA DRINK TO INDEFINITE CLOSURE

PORT MORESBY: The campaign to make #AmazingPortMoresby become clean, safe, healthy and planned city by 2030 put a beverage manufacturer in 8-Mile’s Kennedy Estate to indefinite closure last week.

City Manager, Ravu Frank said the manufacturer of Wasa Drink, Wasa Enterprise Company Limited has been served with indefinite closure notice after a joint inspection carried by National Capital District Commission (NCDC) and the Internal Revenue Commission (IRC).

The joint inspection conducted on site revealed that their factory has been in operation up while being in breach of Public Health and Food Sanitation Act.

Mr Frank said both the building structure and the operation are well below required standards as far as Public Health (Chapter 226), Food and Sanitation Regulation 2007 is concerned.

The firm's operation has largely compromised public health especially of children, elderly and the vulnerable population in the city.

The manufacturer, he said, has failed to comply with by providing all statutory approvals for their operation and other necessary requirements of the NCDC Health, Physical Planning and building.

The drink will not be manufactured for an indefinite period until a proper submission for the factory-setting development plan for statutory approvals is presented to NCDC, he said.

Failure to comply will render tougher legal actions against their operation.

NCDC Compliance Directorate continues to serve the city residents, leading towards the Commission’s vision to create a clean, safe, healthy and planned city, said the City Manager.
