BOROKO PRECINCT TRANSFORMATION 2ND STAKEHOLDER MEETING

PORT MORESBY, FRIDAY 14TH, APRIL 2023: Governor NCD, Hon. Powes Parkop and City Manager, Mr Ravu Frank, hosted stakeholders from Boroko CBD for the second stakeholder dialogue session on the Boroko Precinct Transformation Project at the City Hall Annex yesterday.

The Boroko transformation project is a key city initiative that aligns with the NCDC’s vision for Amazing Port Moresby 2030 and Urban Development Plan. NCDC aims to create a safe, clean, healthy, planned, and liveable city for all its residents.

The project is an ongoing process, and NCDC is committed to transforming the city one street at a time.

Since the last meeting last month till now, as part of the safe city priority for Boroko, NCDC has installed lights, placed police on foot patrol in the CBD, and planning on removing all illegal vending. "We are grateful to the Metsup for their partnership in helping us arrest illegal vendors off the streets," said City Manager.

NCDC provides employment opportunities to young people in Boroko for cleaning activities for the clean city priority. This is a collaboration with the Boroko Youth. NCDC has also installed rubbish bins and recycling initiatives to make the area cleaner and more sustainable. Additionally, 90% of Boroko CBD has been almost lit up, bus stops have been painted, and soon an upgrade will take place at Tabari Place to better represent craft markets and other activities at night.

Big Rooster, Atlas Steel PNG, Monian, CPL, CHM, Tango, Coca-Cola, Brian Bell, PNGTPA, Marie Stopes PNG, Fast Foods, and Steamships contributed meaningfully to the discussions. Media Partners from TVWAN, The National, and Eagle News were also present to record milestones from the meeting.

Business houses in attendance said they were fully on board and willing to participate in the program to make Boroko Precinct a safe, clean environment for everyone.

TPA representatives asked if there were any plans for craft market sales and the promotion of creative arts in the program. The City Manager and Governor responded that the transformation plans did capture this, with works already underway for upgrading the existing craft market and a potential amphitheatre in Tabari Place in the future.

Stakeholders were excited about the plans, and Governor Parkop "urged everyone to participate in the transformation plans and take ownership of the Boroko CBD because this project cannot be achieved without your cooperation and support."

More stakeholder meetings will be scheduled before the launching date next month.
