3RD WED STAKEHOLDER MEETING: STAKEHOLDERS MEET AT CITY HALL FOR WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY (WED) PREPARATION

Port Moresby: This morning's meeting at the City Hall Annex Building Level 2 was held for stakeholders to engage in further dialogue on events planned for the World Environment Day celebrations, which are now, days away.

This year's theme is “Solutions for Plastic Pollution – Beat Plastic Pollution”, and events are earmarked from 18 May to 5 June.

Today's dialogue hosted by NCD Governor Hon. Powes Parkop and the NCDC under the Amazing Port Moresby Directorate included delegates from UPNG, Scuba PNG, Total Energies, POMCCI, Grow Strategies, Nature Park, WWF Pacific, St. John and a team from CIS Bomana.

Participation of Correctional Officers from the Bomana Prison in the World Environment Day celebrations was warmly welcomed. Similar to the PNG Defence Force contingent that attended last week, the involvement of our disciplined forces makes a huge difference. The manpower available allows a broader impact, and their presence boosts the celebrations and will spread goodwill amongst our people.

The week-long activities planned were recapped in the discussions. NCDC will unveil the World Environment Day campaign on 18 May in a media launch, followed by World Tree Kangaroo on 21 May. From Saturday, 27 May to 2 June, a movie titled “A Plastic Ocean” is programmed to be shown throughout the coastal villages and communities, creating awareness on the focal theme of plastics in the ocean. 3 and 4 June will include activities like a City Clean-up and Walk for the Environment. Finally, on the main day, 5 May, a special Exhibition & Panel Discussion is planned to mark the annual celebrations, followed by the re-launching of the “Million Trees” planting by Governor Parkop.

Governor Parkop reiterated that the celebration's desired outcome is to promote sustainable action through a mindset and behaviour change.

“We must understand the importance of personal responsibility in this global effort.”

A meaningful dialogue was made today, with stakeholders present and all contributing to the discussions. Professor Frank Griffin, the Vice Chancellor of UPNG, said the nation’s premier university fully supports the program and has attended every meeting held to date.

Stakeholders have been encouraged to continue to communicate and liaise with the team at NCDC under the Amazing Port Moresby Directorate as preparations are being fine-tuned for the exciting events that will kick start a week from today.

The residents of Amazing Port Moresby are encouraged to get into the spirit of the celebrations, joining millions worldwide to join the fight for sustained action towards preserving our environment.
