The Inaugural NCD Women’s Summit & Expo
Today’s session of the NCD Women’s Summit at APEC House saw a productive gathering of over 200 registered participants, including women leaders from government, private, and NGO sectors, alongside students, teachers, and community representatives. This diverse group united in purpose, working toward a stronger, brighter future for women and girls in Port Moresby.
The event began with a warm welcome from City Manager Mr. Ravu Frank, followed by an opening address from NCD Governor Hon. Powes Parkop, LLB, LLM, MP. Representatives from the United Nations were also present, reinforcing a message of confidence and support for women and girls to speak up, share ideas, and actively engage in meaningful discussions.
At the heart of this inaugural summit is a commitment to Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (GEWE). The summit’s primary focus is how the city of Port Moresby can effectively elevate the status of women and girls, working toward gender equality and empowerment across all sectors. While ending violence against woman and girls is a key, the principal objective is broader: to create a city where women and girls are respected, valued, and have equal opportunities to succeed.
A significant highlight of the summit will be on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, when Prime Minister James Marape will attend to receive petitions from participants, representing the voices and concerns of women and girls across Port Moresby.
Stay tuned for updates as we continue to share insights from the summit’s remaining days.
