PM MARAPE AND GOVERNOR PARKOP MEET TO INITIATE PLANNING ON 50TH INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY ACTIVITIES

Prime Minister Hon. James Marape and NCD Governor Hon. Powes Parkop have met today to initiate discussions on the planning for PNG’s 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations and related activities.

The meeting is preliminary to a full stakeholders’ meeting to be held on Monday, 6 January 2025 when the Prime Minister, Governor Parkop and Hon. Justin Tkatchenko, Minister in charge of National Events, will meet with representatives from all agencies involved in planning and executing the activities for this milestone event.

PM Marape said, his meeting with Governor Parkop is to have the National Government and the municipal government on the same page in respect to the planning for the 50th anniversary activities.

“We are expecting up to 30 world leaders from all parts of the world to join us including all Pacific leaders have given their indication to join us on 16 September as we celebrated our 50 years Golden Jubilee,” said the Prime Minister.

Governor Parkop stated t that Port Moresby, as the Nation’s Capital will be the epicenter of this momentous year in the journey of our people and our country as a nation.

“It is therefore important that the National Government and our City’s municipal Government are working in alignment to ensure we deliver a great celebration befitting of the occasion,” said Governor Parkop.

He thanked the Prime Minister for initiating these early discussions because the municipal government do have plans for the City to contribute to the occasion but have been waiting for National Government to finalize its plans so both can synchronize their plans together to make them outstanding.

NCDC Board and Management have set this as one of their priority their goal for this year to have an outstanding 50th Anniversary celebration.

Governor Parkop was pleased to have this dialoged as early stating that there is no time to waste.

A lot have been planned in both celebrations and development that will compliment the occasion Governor Parkop said, adding the municipal government want have the City ready in all aspects before the main celebrations in September this year, 2025.

“We are ready, prepared and we planned to deliver for Port Moresby and PNG a memorable year and experience,” said Governor Parkop.

Governor Parkop will announce in details the plans the municipal government has for the city during the stakeholders meeting next Monday 6th of January 2025.
