Nation of a Thousand Tribes, Destined for a Greater Future

Residents from all three electorates in the National Capital District, along with Motu Koita villages, gathered early Sunday morning to join NCD Governor Powes Parkop for the Independence Unity Walk from Murray Barracks to Ela Beach.

The walk, held under the theme *One People, One City, One Future*, symbolized unity within Port Moresby and across Papua New Guinea (PNG).

In his address, Governor Parkop urged everyone to take pride in PNG and embrace their national identity with patriotism.

“Our nation is a land of a thousand tribes, with diverse cultures and traditions, speaking over 860 languages. Yet, we stand united, proving wrong those who predicted we would fail due to our diversity, our diversity is our strength, let’s embrace it” said Governor Parkop.

He emphasized that unity has been the cornerstone of PNG’s success since its independence 49 years ago.

“Through unity, we will continue to grow and thrive, we can become a greater nation,” he added.

Reflecting on PNG’s journey, Governor Parkop acknowledged the resilience of its people, who have lived and on this land for over 50,000 years.

“We celebrate our independence today because our people are determined, they are willing to toil the soil, go fishing, work hard and live of this blessed land to shape a brighter future for all of us,” he said.

He reminded everyone of PNG’s wealth, noting the country’s natural resources like gold, copper, gas, and oil, and urged the people to remain grateful for these blessings.

Despite the challenges of the past 49 years, Governor Parkop expressed confidence in a promising future, driven by the unity of PNG’s people.

“Happy Independence, Papua New Guinea, as we look forward to celebrating our 50th Golden Jubilee next year. I am a proud Papua New Guinean, “ he concluded.
